Press: Postcard Collages

ree

Ever since I moved back to the East Coast decades ago, I've been mailing homemade postcards to my friends as a way to stay in touch. The 3" x 5" or 6" x 4" images have ranged from scratched-up photos to colored-pencil drawings to self-portrait collages. These rough-hewn pieces of mail art were never intended for larger audiences. Yet this year, as luck would have it, my postcards are getting a bit more attention. Specifically, this fall, two of the postcards are slated to be a part Parallel Cosmologies, a group show curated by Helen Kauder for Ursa Gallery in Bridgeport, CT while seven more will be part of Curiosities, a group show curated by Hans Gallas for Art Haus SF in San Francisco, CA. Additionally, nine postcards (created in reaction to the atrocities currently being enacted by ICE) are now being showcased at the official website of A Gathering of the Tribes. Accompanying these postcards is a Q&A I did with AGOTT's Executive Director Regie Cabico in which we discuss poetic influences, emotional provocations, and the interplay of words and images.
