About the event

On Sat., Jun. 17, 2023, Homo Stanzas & Capturing Fire will host an end-of-season showcase and queer slam competition final at Dupont Underground. ($15 admission)  The pre-Pride showcase starts at 7pm and the Queer Slam starts at 8pm. Co-hosted By Regie Cabico, the "Fairy Godmother of Spoken Word Poetry" (The Washington Post), and Casey Catherine Moore, poet, educator, and disability activist, the evening features Drew Pisarra, New York poet and playwright, making his debut reading from his latest collection of pithy odes to one night stands and lovers, Periodic Boyfriends (Capturing Fire Press) and Kim Villamera, the first Asian woman to win the Virginia Beach Comedy Roast Championship. Our pre-show will feature DC poets: Jessica Genia Simon, author of Built Of All I Shape and Name (Kelsay Press), Dwayne Lawson-Brown, DC’s former co-host of Spit Dat, Washington, DC’s longest-running open mic and co-author of Breaking the Blank (Day Eight Press), and theater artist and poet, Adrian Gaston Garcia. Following the pre-show, former Homo Stanza winners from the past five previous slams in the 2022-2023 season will compete for the title of first Homo Stanzas Poetry Slam Champion. The poets are 2Deep the Poetess, Ishanee Chanda, Pi-Anir the Poet, Mysfit, and Korie La Té, with C. Alexandria-Bernard Thomas as the calibration poet. The poetry slam is the Olympics of Performance Poetry, where poets read an original 3-minute poem without costumes, music, or props and are scored by audience members on a 0-to-10 point scale.
